English mathematician, educator and researcher, politiican and world traveler, she became deaf in 1921 at age 8 from a viral infection. Her condition never interfered with her full life. She learned to lip read, studied mathematics intently, solving mathematcal puzzles and teaching herself more difficult problems than even her teachers could provide. She later wrote in her autobiography, "Mathematics is the one school subject not dependent on hearing." She graduated from Oxford where she played hockey and became the team's captain for her last two years at school. It wasn't until age 37 that she used a hearing aid for the first time. Sy Scholfield quotes data from Dame Kathleen Ollerenshaw's book, 'To Talk Of Many Things: An Autobiography' (Manchester UP, 2004), p. 2: '[In Manchester] ... I was born in the same front bedroom four years later on 1 October 1912 at 7 o'clock in the morning.'
