Indian saint and mystic, renowned as the founder of the Ramakrishna Mission, better know in the west as the Vedanta Society. An assistant in the temple of the goddess Kali from 1855 he devoted his life to his religious ideals. He was a pantheist, believing that all religious paths lead to God-consciousness. To many Hindus he represented a "supremely realized self" and an incarnation of the divine. Sy Scholfield quotes from Thakur - Sri Ramakrishna: A Biography by Rajiv Mehrotra (Hay House, 2011): "The child of their dreams, visions and visitations was born on 18 February 1836 at 5.15 a.m. (Bengali calendar: 17 February) and they named him Ramakrishna."
